How to convert AVIF to JPG
- Add your AVIF filesChoose files, drop them on the box or paste an image. Conversion begins as soon as a file is accepted.
- Choose quality and backgroundKeep Quality at 90 for a sharp result, or lower it for a smaller file. AVIF images with transparency get the background color you pick, white by default.
- Download the JPG filesSave them one by one or press Download all (ZIP). Each JPG keeps the original file name.
What is an AVIF file?
AVIF is an image format built on the AV1 video codec, first specified by the Alliance for Open Media in 2019. It often matches JPG quality at a much smaller file size, supports transparency and HDR, and can store 10-bit or 12-bit color. Chrome, Firefox and Safari all display it today, and sites such as photo libraries and shops increasingly serve it, so images you save from the web are often .avif files.
The format is still newer than most software. Many editors, document tools and upload forms cannot open an AVIF, and operating system previews are hit and miss. A JPG works in practice everywhere, which is why people convert.

What changes when AVIF becomes JPG
The biggest change is file size. AVIF is far more efficient, so the JPG of the same picture is normally larger, often noticeably so. If size is a concern, lower the quality slider a few steps or run the result through the compress tool.
JPG stores 8 bits per color channel. A 10-bit AVIF is reduced to 8-bit during conversion, which is invisible in most pictures but can show faint banding in smooth skies and gradients. HDR images are rendered into the ordinary sRGB range, so they look flatter than on an HDR screen.
Animated AVIF files are converted from the first frame only, and the file row says so.
Browser support and failures
The tool first asks your browser to decode the AVIF. If that fails, for example in an older browser, it falls back to a built-in decoder that works without browser support. A file that neither route can read is reported as damaged instead of producing an empty JPG.
- Transparent areas are filled with your chosen background, since JPG has no alpha channel.
- Camera and location data are not copied to the JPG.
- Up to 30 files per batch on a computer, 15 on a phone, 50 MB each.
- Need transparency kept? Use the AVIF to PNG converter.
Questions
How do I convert AVIF to JPG?
Add the AVIF file to this page and the JPG appears in a moment. Press Download on its row to save it.
Why can't I open AVIF files on my computer?
AVIF support in operating systems and apps is still patchy. Browsers open it, but many editors and viewers do not, so converting to JPG is the easy workaround.
Will the JPG look worse than the AVIF?
A little, since JPG is lossy and AVIF is more efficient. At quality 90 most people cannot tell the difference, though the JPG will take more space.
What happens to transparency?
JPG cannot store it, so transparent pixels become the background color you choose. White is the default.
Is anything uploaded?
No. Decoding and encoding run in your browser and your images never reach a server.
Does it work with animated AVIF?
It converts the first frame only and tells you so in the file row.
