How to convert HEIC to PNG

  1. Add your HEIC photosChoose files, drop them on the box, or paste them. You can add several at once, and each one converts as soon as it is added.
  2. Check the optionsPNG has no quality setting. Tick Optimize size only if you want a smaller file and can wait a little longer for each photo.
  3. Download your PNG filesSave one file, or press Download all (ZIP) to get every PNG in one download.

What is a HEIC to PNG converter for?

PNG stores every pixel without losing detail, so it is the safe choice when a photo must be edited again, placed in a design tool or kept as an exact copy of what the camera decoded. Plenty of software that rejects HEIC accepts PNG.

This converter decodes the HEIC photo in your browser and writes the pixels to a PNG. Because the picture is not sent to a server, it also suits private photos and documents.

The HEIC file is decoded and saved as lossless PNG on your device. (HEIC, PNG)

PNG file sizes

Expect a PNG to be much larger than the HEIC it came from, often ten times or more, because PNG keeps every pixel of a photo and HEIC discards detail you cannot see. In our test, a 12 MP photo-like image was 26.5 MB as PNG and 2.1 MB as HEIC. Converting to PNG does not make the picture sharper than the original.

If you only need a picture to share or upload, the HEIC to JPG converter gives a far smaller file. Use Optimize size to shrink a PNG without changing a single pixel, at the cost of extra processing time.

Transparency, color and metadata

HEIC photos from a phone camera are almost always opaque. If a file carries a transparency layer (an alpha channel, as on iPhone cut-out stickers), the PNG keeps the transparent areas. If your browser cannot read that layer, the PNG is saved opaque. Colors are saved in the standard sRGB range, so photos taken in Display P3 can shift very slightly.

The PNG does not include location or camera details, and the photo is rotated upright using the rotation stored in the HEIC file.

  • Live Photos: only the still image is converted.
  • Up to 30 files per batch on a computer and 15 on a phone.
  • Photos above about 64 megapixels (24 on a phone) are refused with a message.
  • Works in Safari, and in Chrome or Edge on devices that can decode HEVC video. Firefox cannot open HEIC.

Questions

How do I convert HEIC to PNG?

Add your HEIC files to the box on this page. Each one converts right away and you can download the PNG files one by one or as a ZIP.

Does converting HEIC to PNG lose quality?

PNG itself is lossless, so it adds no further loss. The HEIC was already compressed by the camera, and the PNG keeps exactly what the decoder produces.

Why is my PNG so much bigger than the HEIC?

HEIC is a very efficient photo format, while PNG stores every pixel. For photos, JPG is usually the better format when file size matters.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. Everything runs in your browser, and the files never leave your device.

Why does it say my browser cannot open HEIC?

HEIC decoding needs Safari, or Chrome or Edge on a device that can decode HEVC video. Firefox does not support it. On an iPhone you can choose Settings > Camera > Formats > Most Compatible to save new photos as JPG.

Will the PNG keep the photo's rotation?

Yes. The tool applies the rotation stored in the HEIC file, so portrait photos stay upright.
