How to convert HEIC to JPG
- Add your HEIC photosChoose files from your computer or phone, drop several at once, or paste them. HEIF files work too. Conversion starts as soon as a photo is added.
- Pick the qualityThe default of 90 gives a sharp picture with a reasonable file size. Move the slider up for the most detail or down for smaller files, then press Convert again.
- Download your JPG filesSave each picture, or use Download all (ZIP) when you converted more than one.
What is a HEIC file?
HEIC is the photo format iPhones and many recent Android phones use by default. Apple describes HEIF as offering better compression than JPEG at the same visual quality, so photos use less storage and your camera roll fits more of them. How much less depends on the picture. The catch is compatibility: many websites, older computers, forms and printing services still ask for JPG.
A HEIC to JPG converter rewrites the photo in the older, universal format. This one does the work in your browser, so a private family picture or a scan of a document is not sent to any server.

How big is the JPG compared with the HEIC?
In our test, a 12 MP HEIC of 2.13 MB became a 1.73 MB JPG at the default quality of 90, which is 19 percent smaller. The same picture saved straight to JPG at quality 92 was 2.18 MB. So at a high quality setting a JPG can be about as large as the HEIC, and a lower quality gives a clearly smaller file.
| File | Size | Compared with the HEIC |
|---|---|---|
| HEIC, made by macOS from the test image | 2.13 MB (2,131,514 bytes) | Baseline |
| JPG from this tool, quality 90 (default) | 1.73 MB (1,733,036 bytes) | 19% smaller |
| Same image saved directly as JPG, quality 92 | 2.18 MB (2,179,008 bytes) | 2% larger |
Test image: our own sample scene scaled to 4032 by 3024 pixels (12 MP) with seeded camera-like noise added, so it behaves like a detailed photo. Real photos differ, and flat graphics behave differently. The HEIC was written by the macOS sips tool at its default quality, which is not the same encoder as an iPhone camera. The JPG came from the real converter on this page with default settings.
Which browsers can open HEIC?
Safari on iPhone, iPad and Mac reads HEIC with the system decoder. Chrome and Edge read it through the device's HEVC video decoder, so it works on computers and phones that can play HEVC video in hardware, which includes many models from the last several years. Older machines and some Linux setups cannot. Firefox cannot open HEIC yet.
This page checks your browser when it loads. If HEIC is not available, you see a clear message above the upload box with the options below, instead of a failed upload.
- Use Safari, or Chrome or Edge on a newer computer or phone.
- On iPhone, Settings > Camera > Formats > Most Compatible saves new photos as JPG.
- When sharing from the Photos app, choose Automatic or Most Compatible to send a JPG.
Does converting HEIC to JPG remove location data?
Yes. JPG files made here do not carry location or camera details, because the picture is redrawn from its pixels. The photo is turned upright using the rotation stored in the HEIC file, so it looks the same as in your gallery.
Colors are saved in the standard sRGB range, and 10-bit HDR photos are reduced to 8 bits. Photos taken in the wider Display P3 range can look very slightly different, which is normal for any JPG converter.
- Live Photos: only the still image is converted.
- Burst and depth data are ignored. Only the main picture is saved.
- JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas of a HEIC file are filled with the background color (white by default).
- Very large photos are refused with a message: the limit is about 64 megapixels on a computer and 24 on a phone.
Questions
How do I convert HEIC to JPG for free?
Add your HEIC files to the box on this page and download the JPG results. There is no sign-up, watermark or daily limit.
Do my photos leave my device?
No. The conversion runs inside your browser. Nothing is uploaded, so your pictures stay private.
Can I convert many HEIC files at once?
Yes. Add up to 30 files on a computer or 15 on a phone, up to 300 MB in total on a computer (150 MB on a phone). Download them one by one or as a ZIP.
Why did my browser say it cannot open HEIC?
Your browser or device cannot decode HEVC video, which HEIC photos use. Try Safari, or Chrome or Edge on a newer device. You can also switch the iPhone camera to Most Compatible so new photos are JPG.
Will the JPG be smaller or bigger than the HEIC?
It depends on the photo and the quality. HEIC compresses more efficiently, so a JPG at a similar visual quality is often larger. In our test the JPG at quality 90 (1.73 MB) was smaller than the 2.13 MB HEIC, so lower the quality slider if size matters.
Is JPG or PNG better when I convert HEIC?
Choose JPG for photos, since it keeps files small. Choose PNG only if you need lossless output, and use the HEIC to PNG converter for that.
