  2. Set DPI, pages and backgroundPick a resolution from 72 to 300 DPI, choose all pages or a range like 2-4, and decide between white and transparent.

When PNG is better than JPG for a PDF page

PNG stores every pixel exactly. For a PDF page made of text, charts, line art or interface screenshots, that means letters stay sharp with no blurry halo around them, which JPG compression tends to add. If you plan to edit the page, reuse a graphic in a presentation or zoom in to read small print, PNG is usually the better choice.

The price is file size. A text page can be small as PNG, but a photo-heavy page can be several times larger than the same page saved as JPG. If size matters more than perfect edges, use the PDF to JPG tool instead.

A PDF page is drawn into a lossless PNG, optionally with a transparent background. (PDF, PNG)

Transparent background

Most PDF pages are drawn on top of white paper, so by default the PNG gets a white background. Choose Transparent when the page content has no background of its own, such as a logo, a vector drawing or a signature exported to PDF. The paper colour is then left out and only the drawn content remains, ready to place over anything.

Pages that paint their own full-page background, for example slides with a coloured backdrop, stay filled. Transparency only appears where the PDF itself leaves the page empty.

Which DPI should you choose?

Use 150 DPI for screens and 300 DPI for print. At 72 DPI an A4 page is about 595 by 842 pixels, enough for a thumbnail. At 150 DPI, the default, it is about 1240 by 1754 pixels. At 300 DPI it is about 2480 by 3508 pixels, which is full print quality and a large file. If a very large page would not fit in your device memory, the resolution is lowered automatically and you are told.

Pages are drawn one by one, so even a long document keeps memory use low. One batch can hold up to 200 pages on a computer and 100 on a phone. For longer files, convert one range at a time.

  • Files are named after the PDF with the page number, for example slides-page-07.png.
  • A ZIP of all pages is named after the PDF too, for example slides-png.zip.
  • Password-protected PDFs are not unlocked. You see a clear message and can try again with an unprotected copy.

Questions

How do I convert a PDF to PNG?

Add the PDF, choose a DPI, press Convert to PNG and download the images. Several pages come as a ZIP.

Can I get a transparent PNG from a PDF?

Yes. Choose Transparent as the background. Areas the PDF leaves empty become see-through, while pages with their own background colour stay filled.

What DPI should I use?

150 DPI is a good default for screens. Use 300 DPI for print quality or when you need to zoom into fine detail.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. It is opened and drawn in your browser using files served from this site. Nothing is sent to a server.

Can I convert just one page?

Yes. Choose Page range and enter the number, for example 4. Only that page is drawn and it downloads directly.

Why are my PNG files so big?

PNG is lossless, so photo-heavy pages make large files. Lower the DPI, or use the PDF to JPG tool for smaller pictures.
