What is an AVIF file?
An AVIF file stores a still picture compressed with the AV1 video codec. Compared with JPG it often needs far fewer bytes for similar quality, and unlike JPG it supports transparency, 10-bit and 12-bit color and HDR. The file extension is .avif, and the picture lives inside the same kind of container HEIC files use. Browsers read it without trouble, which is why web images are increasingly delivered this way.
Outside the browser, support is thinner. Design tools, slide software and older operating systems often cannot open an AVIF. PNG is the dependable alternative when you want exact pixels and a transparent background, for example for a logo or a cut-out product photo.

Expect a much bigger file
AVIF is one of the most efficient formats around and PNG is one of the least efficient for photographs. A photo can grow many times over when it moves from AVIF to PNG, easily by a factor of ten or more for a detailed picture. That is the price of storing every pixel exactly, and the PNG will not look better than the AVIF did.
For photographs with no transparency, the AVIF to JPG converter gives a far smaller file. Choose PNG when you need the alpha channel, plan to edit and re-save many times, or work with graphics and screenshots.
Color depth, animation and failures
PNG output here is 8 bits per channel, so a 10-bit or 12-bit AVIF is reduced to 8-bit. HDR images are mapped into the normal sRGB range. Animated AVIF files give a still PNG from the first frame, and the file row notes it.
Decoding first uses your browser. If it cannot read the file, a bundled decoder takes over. A file that still fails is reported as unreadable rather than saved as a blank image.
- Semi-transparent edges and shadows are preserved.
- Camera and location data are not copied.
- Up to 30 files per batch on a computer, 15 on a phone, 50 MB each.
Questions
What is an AVIF file?
AVIF is an image format based on the AV1 video codec. It compresses well, supports transparency and HDR, and is common on modern websites.
Does AVIF to PNG keep the transparent background?
Yes. The alpha channel is carried into the PNG, so transparent and semi-transparent pixels stay as they were.
Why is my PNG so large?
PNG is lossless and AVIF is highly compressed, so photos grow a lot. Use AVIF to JPG when you do not need transparency and want a small file.
Is the conversion lossless?
Saving the PNG adds no loss, but it cannot restore detail that the AVIF compression already removed.
Do my images leave my computer?
No. Everything runs inside your browser tab, and no file is uploaded.
Can I convert several AVIF files together?
Yes, up to 30 at a time on a computer or 15 on a phone, with a ZIP download for the batch.
