What does flipping an image do?
Flipping creates a mirror image. A horizontal flip swaps left and right, like a reflection in a mirror, so text reads backward and a person's parting moves to the other side. A vertical flip swaps top and bottom, like a reflection in a lake.
Flipping is not the same as rotating. A 180 degree rotation is the same as flipping both ways, but a single flip cannot be made by turning the picture. If you only need to turn a photo sideways, use a rotate tool instead.
This tool moves the actual pixels, so the downloaded file is truly flipped. It does not rely on a rotation note that some apps ignore.
When to flip a picture
Selfies from a front camera are often saved mirrored, and flipping them back makes signs and shirt text readable. Product photos are sometimes flipped so that an item points toward the text next to it. Designers flip a portrait so the subject looks into the page instead of out of it.
Flipping is also a quick way to check a composition, because errors that you stopped noticing show up in a mirrored view. Painters and photographers have used this trick for a long time.
- Fix a mirrored selfie so text reads the right way.
- Create a mirror effect or a reflection for a design.
- Make a subject face the other way in a layout.
- Prepare iron-on or transfer artwork that must be printed reversed.
Quality, formats and batches
PNG is saved without any loss of detail from the flip. JPG and WebP files are saved again as part of the flip, at quality 92 by default, which is visually the same for normal photos. You can change the quality or choose another output format.
Transparency in PNG and WebP is kept. Phone photos are turned upright using their rotation note before the flip, so Horizontal always means left to right as you see it. Location and camera data are removed from the result.
To flip several photos, add them all, choose a direction and press Flip. Select any file in the list to preview it.
Flip an image on iPhone, Android and desktop
On an iPhone the Photos app has a mirror button inside the editor, but it changes the photo in your library. Here you get a separate copy and you can do many at once. Open this page in your phone browser, tap Choose files and pick photos. HEIC photos should be converted to JPG first.
On a computer, drag and drop works, or paste an image from the clipboard.
Before and after

Questions
How do I flip an image horizontally?
Add the image, keep Horizontal selected and press Flip image. The result is a left to right mirror of your picture.
How do I flip an image on an iPhone?
Open this page in Safari, tap Choose files, select the photo, pick a direction and press Flip. Save the result to your device. You can also use the mirror button in the Photos editor.
What is the difference between flip and mirror?
They mean the same thing for a left to right change. Flip also covers turning the picture upside down, which is a vertical flip.
Does flipping reduce quality?
PNG keeps every pixel. JPG and WebP are saved again at quality 92 by default, which looks the same for photos. Raise the quality slider for a near perfect copy.
Is my image uploaded?
No. The picture is flipped inside your browser and never sent to a server.
Can I flip many images at once?
Yes. Add up to 30 on a computer or 15 on a phone and flip them with one click. Download them as a ZIP.
Is flipping the same as rotating 180 degrees?
Flipping both ways gives the same result as a 180 degree rotation. A single horizontal or vertical flip cannot be made by rotating.
