What is a WebP file?

WebP is an image format Google released in 2010 to make web pictures smaller. It can compress lossy like JPG or lossless like PNG, and it can hold transparency and short animations. In Google's own comparison, lossy WebP files were 25 to 34 percent smaller than JPEG at the same visual quality, which is why many sites serve it by default. When you right-click an image on such a site and save it, you often end up with a .webp file.

The trouble starts after the download. Older photo editors, some email clients, print shops, office programs and many upload forms still expect a JPG. Converting is the quickest fix. This tool decodes the WebP in your browser and writes a standard JPG, so the result opens everywhere.

The WebP is decoded and re-saved as JPG on your device. (WebP, JPG)

Is a JPG bigger than the WebP it came from?

Yes, usually. WebP is the more efficient format, so the same picture takes more bytes as a JPG. In our test, a photo-like WebP of 384 KB became a 952 KB JPG at quality 90, about 2.5 times larger, and our 36 KB sample WebP became 87 KB, about 2.4 times larger. Lower the quality slider if the size matters.

WebP to JPG at the default quality of 90. Measured on 16 Oct 2026 with this tool in Chrome 154 on macOS.
ImageWebP sizeJPG sizeJPG compared with WebP
Photo-like, 4032 x 3024 px384 KB (384,490 bytes)952 KB (951,575 bytes)2.5 times larger
Flat illustration, 1200 x 800 px36 KB (36,012 bytes)87 KB (86,689 bytes)2.4 times larger

Test image: our own sample scene scaled to 4032 by 3024 pixels (12 MP) with seeded camera-like noise added, so it behaves like a detailed photo. Real photos differ, and flat graphics behave differently. The photo-like WebP was saved at quality 80 by Chrome. The illustration is our own sample file, assets/samples/sample-original.webp.

Transparency, animation and quality

JPG has no transparency, so every see-through pixel must become a solid color. The Background for transparent areas option controls that color. White suits most photos and documents. Choose black for light logos, or a custom color to match a page.

Animated WebP files are converted as a still picture using the first frame only, and the file row tells you when that happens. If you need the whole animation, a GIF or video tool is the better route.

WebP to JPG is a lossy step. A lossless WebP converted at quality 90 will be slightly different at the pixel level, though it looks the same to the eye. If you must keep every pixel exactly, use the WebP to PNG converter instead.

When this converter is the right choice

Use it when a website saved a picture as WebP and your editor will not open it, when a marketplace or form rejects the file type, or when you want to send photos to someone with older software.

  • Colors are saved in the standard sRGB range, so wide-gamut originals can shift very slightly.
  • Camera and location data are not copied into the JPG. WebP files rarely carry it anyway.
  • Files up to 50 MB are accepted on a computer and 30 MB on a phone.
  • The tool reads the real file type, so a mislabeled file gets a clear message instead of a broken result.

Questions

How do I convert a WebP file to JPG?

Add the WebP file to the box on this page. The JPG is made in your browser within a moment. Press its Download button to save it.

Does converting WebP to JPG lower the quality?

Slightly, because JPG is lossy. At the default quality of 90 the difference is hard to see. Raise the slider toward 100 for more detail and a bigger file.

What happens to the transparent background?

JPG cannot be transparent, so those areas are filled with the background color you choose. The default is white.

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. Decoding and saving happen on your device. The page only loads its own code, and your files are never sent to a server.

Can I convert many WebP files at once?

Yes. Add up to 30 files on a computer or 15 on a phone and download them one by one or as a single ZIP.

Why is my JPG bigger than the WebP?

WebP compresses more efficiently, so the same picture usually takes more space as JPG. In our test the JPG was about 2.5 times larger than the WebP at quality 90. Lower the quality slider if the file size matters.
