How to convert a GIF to PNG or JPG

  1. Add your GIF filesChoose files, drop them in or paste from the clipboard. The first frame is converted straight away.
  2. Pick a frame and a formatChoose PNG or JPG. For a GIF with several frames, click a thumbnail to convert that frame, or set Export to All frames.
  3. Download the imagesSave files one at a time or take a ZIP. Every extracted frame has its number in the file name.

What happens when a GIF becomes a PNG?

A GIF is a short stack of frames that play one after another. A PNG holds exactly one picture. Converting means choosing which frame or frames to turn into still images, so the animation itself cannot be kept in a PNG.

Many GIFs store only the part of the picture that changed in each frame. This tool rebuilds every frame the way a browser shows it, following the disposal rules and transparency settings in the file, so the PNG you get is the full picture and not a cropped patch.

Each frame is rebuilt in full, then saved as its own PNG or JPG. (GIF, PNG)

GIF to JPG and the transparent background

Choose JPG when you need a small photo-style file for an email, a document or a form that rejects PNG. JPG cannot be transparent, so transparent areas are painted with a background color. White is the default, and you can pick black, gray or any color.

A quality slider sets the JPG size. Flat artwork and screenshots stay sharp at 90, while photographic GIFs can go lower to save space.

  • PNG keeps transparent areas transparent and has no quality setting.
  • GIF transparency is on or off for each pixel, so the PNG will not have soft shadows unless the GIF already faked them with colors.
  • A GIF has at most 256 colors per frame, and the converted image keeps exactly those colors.

Extract frames from a GIF

When a file has more than one frame, a row of thumbnails appears under it. Click a thumbnail to convert that frame. The small number under each thumbnail matches the number in the file name.

Set Export to All frames to get one image per frame. The results are listed together and can be saved as one ZIP, with names such as photo-frame-001.png, photo-frame-002.png and so on.

Limits and what is not kept

A GIF can have up to 200 frames. Longer files are refused with a clear message, because a long animation at full size would use too much memory on a phone. Each file can be up to 50 MB, and a batch can hold 30 files on a computer or 15 on a phone.

Frame timing and looping are not saved, since a still image has no timeline.

Questions

How do I convert a GIF to PNG?

Add the GIF and the first frame is converted to PNG right away. Download it, or click another thumbnail to convert a different frame.

Can I save a GIF as JPG?

Yes. Set Output format to JPG, choose a quality and a background color for transparent areas, and convert. JPG cannot be transparent.

How do I extract all frames from a GIF?

Set Export to All frames and convert. Each frame becomes its own image with the frame number in the name, and you can download them all as a ZIP.

Will the PNG keep the transparent background?

Yes. Transparent pixels in the GIF stay transparent in the PNG. Transparency in a GIF is either fully on or fully off, so edges are not semi-transparent.

Why is there a 200 frame limit?

Rebuilding and saving hundreds of full-size frames needs a lot of memory, especially on phones. If your GIF is longer, trim it first and try again.

Are my GIFs uploaded anywhere?

No. Decoding and saving happen in your browser, so the files never leave your device.
