Why WebP files need converting

WebP is a picture format made for websites. It gives smaller files than JPG and PNG, so many sites serve their images as WebP, and browsers often save them as .webp when you use Save image as. That is where the trouble starts: many printers, office programs, upload forms and older phones do not accept WebP at all.

PDF is the format almost everything does accept. Putting the WebP picture on a PDF page gives you something you can attach to an email, print at a copy shop or submit to a portal. The converter decodes the WebP in your browser, so the picture is never sent to anyone.

A WebP picture is decoded and placed on a PDF page. (WebP, PDF)

Saving images from a website as PDF

If a site only offers its picture as WebP, save it to your device first, then add it here. Browsers may also give you a WebP when you drag a picture from a page, so the file picker on this page accepts the .webp extension as well as the image type.

Lossy WebP pictures are stored in the PDF as high quality JPEG, which keeps photos close to the original and the PDF small. Lossless WebP graphics, such as screenshots and logos, can be stored without any loss with the Keep exact pixels option.

Animated and transparent WebP

A WebP file can be animated. A PDF page cannot move, so only the first frame is used. If you need another frame, export it from the animation first.

WebP can also hold transparency. By default see-through areas become white, which is what most printed documents need. Choose Keep transparent to preserve the alpha channel for pictures that really contain see-through pixels.

  • Files are recognised by their contents, so a WebP renamed to .jpg still works.
  • Each picture can be up to 40 megapixels.
  • One PDF for the whole batch, or one PDF per picture in a ZIP.

Questions

How do I save a WebP as PDF?

Add the WebP file here, choose a page size and press Create PDF. The download starts when the PDF is ready.

Why can't I open or print my WebP file?

Not every program supports WebP yet. Converting it to PDF gives you a file that every printer, phone and office program can open.

Is anything uploaded when I convert WebP to PDF?

No. The picture is decoded and the PDF is built inside your browser. Nothing leaves your device.

What happens to an animated WebP?

Only the first frame goes into the PDF, because PDF pages are still.

Can I merge several WebP images into one PDF?

Yes. Add them all, drag them into order, and one PDF with one page per image is created.

Will converting reduce the quality?

Photos are stored as high quality JPEG, which is hard to tell apart from the original. Tick Keep exact pixels for a lossless copy at a larger file size.
