How to convert JPG to PNG

  1. Add your JPG photosChoose JPG or JPEG files, drop them on the box or paste an image. They convert as soon as they are added.
  2. Leave it as is or optimizePNG has no quality setting. Tick Optimize size if you want a smaller PNG and do not mind waiting a bit longer.
  3. Download the PNG filesSave them individually or grab a ZIP. Photos with a rotation flag come out upright.

What does converting JPG to PNG do?

JPG and PNG store pictures in opposite ways. JPG throws away fine detail to stay small, while PNG keeps every pixel exactly as it is. Converting a JPG to PNG decodes the photo and stores those pixels without further loss, so the PNG is a faithful copy of what the JPG looks like now.

It cannot bring back detail the JPG already lost, and it does not create transparency. What you gain is a format that will not degrade when you edit and save repeatedly, and one that works where a tool insists on PNG.

The JPG pixels are written to PNG with no further compression loss. (JPG, PNG)

Good reasons to use PNG

Choose PNG when you plan several rounds of editing, because every JPG re-save adds a little more damage while a PNG can be saved forever without change. It is also the safer choice when a design tool, a game engine, a slide template or a platform asks specifically for PNG.

If you are after a see-through background, converting is only the first step. The PNG still has a solid background until you remove it in an editor, but it will not pick up new compression damage while you do.

File size and orientation

Expect the PNG to be much larger than the JPG, often ten times or more for a photograph. In our test, a 12 MP photo-like image was 2.2 MB as a JPG at quality 92 and 26.5 MB as a lossless PNG, about 12 times larger. That is normal and does not mean quality improved. When size matters, keep the JPG, or use Optimize size, which re-packs the PNG data without changing a pixel.

Phones often store photos sideways with a flag telling viewers to rotate them. This converter applies that rotation, so the PNG is upright in every program. EXIF, GPS and camera details are not written into the PNG.

  • JFIF and other JPEG files work too, whatever their extension.
  • Color is saved in sRGB, with no embedded profile.
  • Files up to 50 MB, 30 per batch on a computer, 15 on a phone.

Questions

How do I convert JPG to PNG?

Add your JPG file to this page. The PNG is created straight away and you can download it from the result row.

Does JPG to PNG improve quality?

No. The PNG matches the JPG exactly but cannot restore detail that was lost when the JPG was made. It only stops further loss.

Will the PNG have a transparent background?

No. A JPG has no transparency, so the PNG keeps the same solid background. Remove it in an editor if you need see-through areas.

Why is the PNG so much larger?

PNG stores every pixel without lossy compression, which is expensive for photographs. Optimize size shrinks it a little without changing the picture.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The conversion happens in your browser, and your photo never leaves your device.

Can I convert a whole folder?

Yes. Add up to 30 files on a computer or 15 on a phone, then download a ZIP.
