What does PDF to JPG do?

PDF to image conversion works by rendering. A PDF page is a set of drawing instructions: text, lines and embedded pictures placed on a sheet. Converting it to JPG draws that page once at a chosen resolution and saves the result as an ordinary photo-style picture. The picture can then be shared in a chat, put on a slide, posted on a website or opened on any device without a PDF reader.

The rendering uses pdf.js, the open source engine behind the PDF viewer in Firefox. It runs inside your browser, with its fonts and decoders loaded from this site, so the document is not sent to any server and no outside service is contacted.

Each PDF page is drawn into its own JPG file. (PDF, JPG)

Which DPI should you choose?

Use 150 DPI for screens and sharing, and 300 DPI for print. Resolution is measured in dots per inch. 72 DPI gives a small picture that suits thumbnails and quick previews. 150 DPI, the default, looks sharp on a screen and is a good size for sharing. 200 DPI suits most office printing. 300 DPI is for print quality or for zooming into small details, and it makes much larger files.

A standard A4 page is about 1240 by 1754 pixels at 150 DPI and about 2480 by 3508 pixels at 300 DPI. Very large pages, such as posters, are scaled down automatically if they would be too big for your device, and the tool tells you when that happens.

Long documents and page ranges

Pages are drawn one at a time and freed straight after they are saved, so memory use stays flat even for long files. A single batch can convert up to 200 pages on a computer and 100 on a phone. If your PDF is longer, enter a range, then convert the next range afterwards.

Files are named after the PDF, with the page number added, for example report-page-03.jpg. The number is padded so that the files sort correctly in any folder.

  • PDF files up to 100 MB on a computer and 50 MB on a phone.
  • JPG quality from 1 to 100, 90 by default. Pages are drawn on a white background.
  • Only what is visible on the page is drawn. Form fields, 3D content and scripts are not carried over.

Password-protected PDFs

A PDF that needs a password to open cannot be converted here. The tool shows a clear message instead of failing silently. Remove the password in the program you used to create the file, or open the PDF in a viewer that you trust, and try again.

Questions

How do I convert a PDF to JPG?

Add the PDF above, choose a resolution, press Convert to JPG and download the images. Multi-page files can be downloaded as a ZIP.

Is it safe to convert a private PDF here?

Yes. The PDF is opened and drawn inside your browser. It is never uploaded, and nothing is kept after you close the page.

Can I convert only some pages?

Yes. Set Pages to Page range and type numbers like 1-3,5. Only those pages are drawn.

Which DPI should I choose?

150 DPI for screens and sharing, 200 DPI for ordinary printing and 300 DPI for high quality print or small text.

Why does my PDF say it is password-protected?

The file asks for a password before it can be read. Unlocking is not supported here, so remove the password first and add the file again.

Can I get PNG instead of JPG?

Yes. The PDF to PNG tool linked below gives lossless images and can keep the page background transparent.
