PNG to JPG (JPEG) converter
Make PNG files smaller by saving them as JPG, also written JPEG. The two names mean the same format. You control the quality and the color that replaces transparency, and your images never leave your browser.

Is JPG smaller than PNG?
Yes, for photos. PNG stores every pixel without loss, while JPG discards detail the eye barely notices. In our test, a 4032 by 3024 pixel photo-like image saved as PNG was 26.5 MB and became 1.8 MB as a JPG at quality 90, the default here. For screenshots, logos and text the PNG often stays competitive and keeps edges sharper. Email limits, upload forms and slow connections are the usual reasons to convert.
This tool reads the PNG in your browser, paints any transparent pixels over a background color, and writes a JPG at the quality you choose.

How much smaller is the JPG?
We ran two PNG files through this converter with its default settings. The photo-like image shrank to 7 percent of its PNG size, about 15 times smaller. The flat illustration shrank to 13 percent, about 7.5 times smaller. Your files will land somewhere else, depending on how much detail they hold.
| Image | PNG size | JPG size | JPG as share of PNG |
|---|---|---|---|
| Photo-like, 4032 x 3024 px | 26.50 MB (26,495,537 bytes) | 1.80 MB (1,796,894 bytes) | 7% |
| Flat illustration, 1200 x 800 px | 530 KB (530,320 bytes) | 71 KB (70,640 bytes) | 13% |
Test image: our own sample scene scaled to 4032 by 3024 pixels (12 MP) with seeded camera-like noise added, so it behaves like a detailed photo. Real photos differ, and flat graphics behave differently. The illustration is our sample scene saved as PNG. Transparency was not involved: the white background option was used.
What happens to transparency when PNG becomes JPG?
Transparent areas are filled with a background color, because JPG cannot be transparent, so the converter must decide what shows through. Semi-transparent pixels such as soft shadows are blended with the background color rather than cut off, so edges stay smooth.
White is right for documents and most product shots. Use black for white or light logos, which would vanish on white. A custom color lets you match the page the image will sit on.
Which PNGs should not become JPG
JPG blurs sharp edges. Screenshots of text, line drawings, icons and logos can show faint halos around letters, especially at lower quality. If crisp edges matter, keep those as PNG and lower the file size with the compress tool instead.
Photos, gradients and scans are the good candidates. At quality 90 the result is visually close to the original while far smaller. Below about 70 artifacts start to show.
- A PNG you convert here is not changed. The JPG is a new file.
- Metadata is not added to the JPG, and orientation is already applied.
- Animated PNG files give the first frame only, and the row says so.
- Files up to 50 MB, 30 per batch on a computer, 15 on a phone.
Questions
How do I convert a PNG to JPG?
Add your PNG to the box on this page, adjust quality if you like and download the JPG. It takes a second or two per file.
Is JPG the same as JPEG?
Yes. JPG and JPEG are the same format, so a PNG to JPEG conversion gives exactly the file you get from PNG to JPG. The short name comes from old systems that allowed three-letter extensions.
What happens to the transparent background?
It is filled with the background color you choose, white by default. Soft edges are blended smoothly with that color.
Will my picture look worse?
A little, because JPG is lossy. At the default quality of 90 the difference is hard to see on photos. Text and sharp lines are more sensitive.
Why is a converted JPG sometimes bigger?
Simple graphics with few colors compress extremely well as PNG. For those, a JPG can end up larger and softer, so keep them as PNG.
Does it upload my images?
No. The conversion runs in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.
Can I convert PNGs in bulk?
Yes. Add up to 30 files on a computer or 15 on a phone and download them all as one ZIP.
