How to convert WebP to PNG

  1. Add your WebP imagesChoose files, drop them in or paste from the clipboard. Each file is converted as soon as it is added.
  2. Decide on file sizePNG output has no quality setting because it is lossless. Tick Optimize size if you want a smaller file and can wait a little longer.
  3. Download the PNG filesSave files one at a time or take a ZIP of the whole batch. Transparent areas stay transparent.

Why turn a WebP into a PNG?

WebP is great for serving pictures on a website, but it is not as widely supported in design and office software as PNG. A logo, sticker or screenshot saved from a web page as WebP may refuse to open in an older editor, a slide deck or a print workflow. PNG opens everywhere and stores every pixel exactly.

This converter decodes the WebP in your browser and writes the pixels to a PNG without any further compression loss. If the WebP had a transparent background, the PNG has it too, including soft semi-transparent edges such as shadows and anti-aliased outlines.

Pixels and transparency pass from the WebP into the PNG unchanged. (WebP, PNG)

What PNG keeps and what it cannot fix

PNG is lossless, so the conversion itself adds no damage. It cannot, however, undo damage that is already in the picture. A WebP that was saved at low quality has visible blocking, and the PNG will faithfully preserve it.

Expect the file to grow. Lossy WebP is very compact, and a PNG of the same photo can be several times larger. Flat graphics such as logos and screenshots grow much less, and sometimes the PNG is smaller.

  • Full alpha transparency is preserved, not flattened onto a color.
  • Animated WebP files give a still PNG from the first frame, and the row says so.
  • Wide-gamut colors are converted to sRGB, so there can be a very small color shift.
  • Camera and location data are not carried over.

Optimize size and large batches

The Optimize size option runs an extra lossless pass that re-packs the PNG data. The picture is identical and the file is usually a little smaller, but it takes noticeably longer on big images, so it starts switched off.

A batch can hold up to 30 files on a computer and 15 on a phone, with up to 50 MB per file. A finished batch can be saved as one ZIP, which is handy after exporting a folder of assets from a site.

Questions

Does WebP to PNG keep the transparent background?

Yes. The PNG keeps the full alpha channel, including semi-transparent edges. Nothing is filled with a background color.

Is the conversion lossless?

Writing the PNG loses nothing. The result matches the decoded WebP pixel for pixel, but it cannot restore detail a lossy WebP already threw away.

Why is the PNG so much bigger than my WebP?

WebP uses very efficient compression. PNG stores pixels exactly, so photos in particular take far more space. For photos where size matters, convert to JPG instead.

Are my files sent to a server?

No. Decoding and PNG creation happen in your browser, and nothing is uploaded.

Can I convert an animated WebP?

Only the first frame is converted, as a still PNG. The result row shows a note when a file was animated.

How many files can I convert at once?

Up to 30 on a computer or 15 on a phone, then download them individually or as a ZIP.
