How to convert WebP to GIF

  1. Add your WebP filesChoose .webp files or drop them on the box. Animated and still files both work, and you can add several at once.
  2. Pick how to treat transparencyKeep transparency to leave see-through areas empty, or paint them white, black, gray or any color you choose.
  3. Download the GIF filesPress Download on a row, or use Download all (ZIP). Each row shows the size, the frame count and the length of the animation.

Why convert WebP to GIF?

WebP is a modern format that stores photos, stills and animations in small files. GIF is much older, and that age is its strength: almost every chat app, e-mail client, forum, document editor and content system accepts a GIF, while some of them still reject WebP or show an animated WebP as a single frozen picture.

This converter reads each frame of an animated WebP, rebuilds the picture the way a browser would show it at that moment, and writes the frames out as an animated GIF with the same timing. A still WebP becomes a one-frame GIF.

Frames are rebuilt, reduced to 256 colors and saved as a looping GIF. (WebP, GIF)

How animated WebP is converted

An animated WebP often stores only the part of the picture that changes from one frame to the next, placed at an offset on a larger canvas. Each frame also says whether the previous frame should be cleared first and whether it should be blended with what is already there. The converter follows those rules exactly, so the GIF shows the same picture the WebP does, not a stack of mismatched fragments.

Frame durations are carried over in hundredths of a second, the unit GIF uses. Very short or zero durations are raised to what browsers actually play. The loop count is kept too: an endless WebP becomes an endless GIF.

What changes when you save as GIF

GIF is an old format with hard limits, and it is worth knowing them before you convert. Each frame can use at most 256 colors, so photos, soft shadows and smooth gradients can look grainier than the original. Transparency is on or off for each pixel, with no partial see-through, so the soft edge of a semi-transparent shape becomes a hard edge. If that looks rough, paint transparent areas with the color of the page the GIF will sit on.

File size can go up, sometimes a lot. WebP compresses animation well, while GIF stores every frame in full. A small animated WebP can easily turn into a GIF several times larger, and the row warns you when that happens.

  • Up to 300 frames per file on a computer, fewer on some phones.
  • Very large animations are refused with a message instead of crashing the tab.
  • Damaged or cut-off files are reported, not converted to a broken GIF.

Keeping GIFs small

If the result is too heavy to share, make the source smaller before converting: fewer frames, a smaller canvas, or a shorter loop all help more than any setting after the fact. A flat background also compresses far better in GIF than noise or film grain.

When the destination accepts it, keep the WebP. Use GIF for places that need it, and keep the original for everything else.

Questions

How do I convert an animated WebP to GIF?

Add the animated WebP to this page, choose how transparent areas should look, and download the GIF. Every frame, its timing and the loop count are kept.

Why is my GIF bigger than the WebP?

WebP compresses animation much better than GIF, which stores each frame in full with at most 256 colors. A GIF several times larger than its WebP is normal. Fewer frames or a smaller canvas in the source helps.

Does the GIF keep transparency?

Yes, but only in one step: a pixel is either transparent or solid. Soft, semi-transparent edges become hard. You can also fill transparent areas with a solid color.

Will the colors look the same?

Often close, but not identical. A GIF frame holds at most 256 colors, so photos and gradients may show banding or grain that the WebP does not have.

What happens with a still WebP?

It is saved as a GIF with a single frame, and the row tells you so.

Is there a limit on frames or size?

Up to 300 frames on a computer, fewer on some phones, and very large canvases are refused with a clear message.

Are my files uploaded?

No. The conversion runs in your browser, so the WebP and the GIF never leave your device.
