What is cropping?
Cropping removes the outer parts of a picture and keeps a rectangle. People crop to remove distractions, to center a subject, to fix a crooked framing or to make a picture fit a place with a fixed shape, such as a profile photo or a banner.
Cropping does not resize or blur what is left. The pixels inside the box are copied exactly from your original, at full resolution. If you also need a specific output size, crop first and then use the Resize image tool.
The picture preview on screen is smaller than your real photo, but the final crop is taken from the full-size file. The numbers you see in the X, Y, Width and Height boxes are real pixels of the original.
Free crop, fixed ratios and exact numbers
Free lets you draw any shape. A fixed ratio locks the shape while you drag, which is what most sites ask for: 1:1 for profile photos and Instagram, 4:3 and 3:2 for standard photos, 16:9 for video thumbnails and slides, 9:16 for stories and vertical video. Custom takes any ratio you type, for example 5:4 for a print.
For exact work use the number boxes. Type the X and Y position of the top left corner and the width and height in pixels. The crop box follows your numbers immediately. If a value would put the box outside the picture, it is adjusted to fit.
- Rotate left and Rotate right turn the picture in 90 degree steps before you crop.
- Mirror horizontally flips the picture before cropping.
- Output format and quality are optional. Same as input is the default.
Crop with the keyboard or a touch screen
Click or tab to the image area and use the arrow keys to move the box by 1 pixel. Hold Shift for steps of 10. Hold Alt with the left or right arrow to change the width, and with the up or down arrow to change the height. The number boxes are also fully usable by keyboard.
On a phone or tablet, drag the box with one finger and pull the edge handles to resize. If you want more precision on a small screen, use the number boxes.
How to crop an image on Mac, Windows and phones
Every system has a basic crop in its photo app, but a browser tool is handy when you are on a shared computer or need exact pixels. On a Mac you can also open the image in Preview and use the selection tool, yet there is no ratio lock or numeric entry. Here you get both, and nothing is installed.
For a round profile picture, crop to 1:1 first and let the site or app apply the circle.

Questions
How do I crop an image to a square?
Choose the 1:1 aspect ratio, move the box over the part you want and press Crop image. For exact pixels, type the same value in Width and Height.
How do I crop an image on a Mac?
Open this page in Safari or Chrome, add your photo, drag the box, and download the result. It works the same on any computer without installing anything.
Does cropping lower the quality?
No. The pixels inside the box are copied from the original at full resolution. If the file is a JPG it is saved again, so keep the quality at 90 or higher to avoid extra loss.
Is my photo uploaded when I crop it?
No. Cropping runs in your browser and the picture never leaves your device.
Can I crop to exact pixel sizes?
Yes. Type X, Y, Width and Height in the number boxes and the crop follows them exactly.
Why does my phone photo not come out rotated?
Phone photos carry a rotation note. This tool applies it, so what you see is what you get, and the rotation note is removed from the result.
Can I crop several images at once?
Crop works on one image at a time because each picture needs its own box. To resize many at once, use the Resize image tool.
